Care Home Residents and Staff are waiting for Tests

It has been reported that thousands of care home residents and staff are waiting for tests, a fortnight after they were promised. As few as 5% of those in care homes have been tested so far, although experts believe more than 20,000 care home residents have now died from the virus. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock announced tests for the sector on April 28th with a target of testing all residents and staff by June 6th, but some care homes reporting outbreaks are still not receiving tests. Nadra Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the National Care Association, said “Why on earth did it take so long to recognise the importance of testing? This is the unfolding tragedy of the decisions taken not to support vulnerable people in social care settings: it is unforgivable and government must act immediately to remedy the situation”.
