As temperatures rise, it is important to take a few simple steps to stay safe and comfortable in hot weather. Those in later life can be more affected by heat, particularly during long periods of high temperatures, so it is worth planning ahead.
The UK Health Security Agency says older adults are among those most at risk during heatwaves, making it important to take extra care during periods of hot weather.
Here are five simple ways to stay safe during hot weather:
Drink regularly
Try to drink water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Dehydration can happen more quickly in hot weather. The NHS recommends avoiding too much alcohol or caffeine, as both can make dehydration worse.
Keep your home cool
Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day and open windows in the evening when the temperature drops. Using a fan or spending time in the coolest room in the house can also help.
Avoid the hottest part of the day
If possible, plan walks, shopping or gardening for the morning or evening. The sun is usually strongest between 11am and 3pm.
Wear light, loose clothing
Light-coloured clothing, a hat and sunscreen can help protect you from the sun and prevent overheating.
Check in with others
A quick call or visit to a friend, neighbour or relative during very hot weather can make a big difference, especially for anyone living alone.
