Staying safe and in control

The internet is a great way to stay in touch with people and make life easier, but it’s also important to be aware of potential dangers. Staying informed can help you protect yourself and navigate safely online.

Visit our webpage Staying safe online in later life | Independent Age to find out more about the steps you can take to keep yourself safe when you’re online.

How safe is your home?

Most of us spend a lot of time at home and we all want to feel safe there. Spending more time at home may make it more likely you’ll come across hazards and accidents. Being aware of potential danger areas and unsafe habits, can help you to keep yourself safe.

Try the quick quiz in our recently updated Home safety guide to find out how safety conscious you are.

If you weren’t sure about any of the questions in the quiz, our guide can help you identify some of the common risks in your home and advise you on ways to prevent accidents, as well as where to go for help when you need it. It also covers useful information on:

•    avoiding falls

•    fire safety

•    electrical safety

•    staying safe in the kitchen

•    managing your medication

•    and more.

Anyone can have an accident, but a fall can affect your confidence, even if it doesn’t result in an injury. Our risk of falling increases as we age, but falls are not inevitable and there are things you can do to stay steady on your feet.

Take some time to walk around your home and use this checklist to help you find any hazards. Ask someone to help you if you can.

Technology to keep you safe at home

Telecare or telehealth is simple technology that can help you stay independent and safe at home. They are devices that keep track of your health and call for help if anything goes wrong.

Telecare includes things like alarms, movement sensors or gas shut-off devices.

Telehealth can monitor your health generally – for example, measuring your blood pressure or your blood sugar levels if you’re diabetic.
