Free bus travel expansion

Free Bus Travel Expansion in Greater Manchester – Why It Matters for Older People

A major change to public transport in Greater Manchester is set to make a real difference to the lives of older people. From 1 March 2026, the Bee Network has introduced free bus travel at any time of day for pensioners, removing previous restrictions and opening up greater freedom and flexibility.

What’s Changed?

Older people with concessionary bus passes can now travel completely free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week across the Bee Network. Previously, free travel was only available after 9:30am. That restriction has now been permanently lifted.

What This Means in Practice

This change has a meaningful impact on day to day life:

  • No more waiting until mid morning to travel
  • Freedom to attend early appointments, including GP and hospital visits
  • Easier access to work, volunteering, and caring responsibilities
  • Greater opportunity to stay socially connected in the evenings and weekends

In short, those with free bus passes now have the same flexibility as any other passenger without the financial burden.

Why This Decision Was Made

The move follows successful trials that showed strong demand and clear benefits for older residents.

Around 400,000 older and disabled people are expected to benefit from the change, which forms part of a wider effort to make public transport more accessible, inclusive, and affordable. Alongside this, Greater Manchester has also continued to cap bus fares, helping to keep travel costs down for everyone.

Why Free Bus Passes Matter

Free bus travel is not just a convenience. It is a lifeline for many older people.

It helps to:

  • Reduce isolation and loneliness
  • Support independence and mobility
  • Improve access to healthcare and essential services
  • Enable older people to remain active in their communities

At a time when many pensioners are facing rising living costs, schemes like this provide vital support and dignity.

Our Campaign to Protect Free Bus Passes

At CSPA, we believe that free bus passes are essential and must be protected nationwide.

While Greater Manchester is leading the way with expanded access, not all areas offer the same level of support and concessionary travel schemes remain vulnerable to cuts and restrictions.

We are actively campaigning to:

  • Protect free bus passes for the older generation
  • Extend access to more flexible, all day travel across the UK
  • Ensure public transport remains affordable and accessible for pensioners
Looking Ahead

The Bee Network’s decision shows what is possible when public policy prioritises inclusion and accessibility.

We will continue to push for similar improvements across the country, ensuring that all older people, regardless of where they live, can benefit from the freedom and independence that free bus travel provides.
