Driving safety in focus: The case for mandatory eye tests

We invited members to share their views on the possible introduction of mandatory eye tests for older drivers, and the response was strong. More than 400 people took part, submitting their opinions through a mix of online and postal responses.

The message was clear: over 80% of respondents support mandatory eye tests for older drivers. That said, many were quick to point out that good vision is essential at any age, with a strong feeling that all drivers—not just older ones—should be required to have regular vision checks.

Members also raised important questions about how such tests would work in practice, particularly around who should be responsible for reporting results to the DVLA or relevant authority. Over half (50%) believe this responsibility should sit with a medical professional. Meanwhile, 30% feel it should be up to drivers themselves, and 13% think reporting should be open to anyone concerned, including family members or healthcare professionals.

When it comes to age thresholds, opinions were mixed. More than half of respondents agree that mandatory testing should begin at age 70, while a quarter disagree with this starting point. A further 12% believe testing should begin at 75, and a small minority would like to see eye tests introduced as early as age 50.

Views were similarly divided on how often tests should take place. The most popular option was every two years (43%), followed by annual testing (30%). Fewer respondents favoured testing every five years (10%) or every three years in line with driving licence renewals (5%).

As one member put it:

“I am 87 and thus very much in the target population and I thoroughly support this suggestion.”

Another echoed the broader sentiment:

“I believe that all drivers irrespective of age should have mandatory eye tests every two years.”
