Don’t forget your photo ID this Thursday

With elections taking place across the UK this Thursday 7th May, voters are being reminded to check what’s happening in their area and whether they need to bring photo ID before heading to the polling station.

Polling day is Thursday, with voting open from 7am to 10pm.

Different types of elections are taking place across the UK. In England, many areas are holding local council and mayoral elections. In Scotland, voters are electing members of the Scottish Parliament, while in Wales, elections are being held for the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). Some areas may also have additional local or by-elections.

The rules on voter ID vary depending on where you are:

In England, voters must bring an accepted form of photo ID to vote in person at local elections. This includes documents such as a passport or driving licence. Without it, you will not be able to receive a ballot paper.

In Wales and Scotland, photo ID is not required for Senedd or Scottish Parliament elections, so voters can attend their polling station without ID.

In Northern Ireland, photo ID has long been required for all elections, and voters will still need to show identification at the polling station.

Because different elections are taking place in different parts of the UK, not everyone will be voting this Thursday. Voters are strongly encouraged to check in advance whether there is an election in their area and where their polling station is.

You can check your local election details, including whether you need ID and where to vote, by visiting the Electoral Commission website and entering your postcode:

Planning ahead is key. Make sure you know what’s required in your area and allow enough time to vote. If you are voting in England or Northern Ireland, don’t forget your photo ID – without it, you may be turned away and need to return later.

Whichever election is taking place where you live, it’s your opportunity to have your say.
